Green transition towards sustainable future touches every part of our life. Wines are no exception. This morning was devoted to a unique experience of private wine tasting of Château Canon La Gaffelière 2016 presented by Florian Guilloteau President of the Association of Sommeliers Nice-Côte d'Azur-Provence and Chef Sommelier of the Hotel Negresco.
Chateau Canon La Gaffelière, former La Gaffelière Boitard named after its owner, was purchased in 1971 by Count Joseph Hubert von Neipperg . In 1983, Stephan von Neipperg took over the management of the Château and raised it to the rank of the First Growths. The vineyard is truly committed to its land and environment.
This estate covering 19.5 hectares was certified organic in 2014 through the change to organic farming practices started many years before. In order to avoid pressure on soil Château Canon-la-Gaffelière has returned to using horses to plow and robotic lawn mowers to mow the grass in the plots. In addition, the grapes are naturally crushed by their own weight during the fermentation in wooden temperature controlled vats.
Chateau Canon La Gaffeliere is located just south of the St. Emilion village at the start of the slopes to the plateau. The clay-limestone and sandy-clay soils retain heat and protect the vines from frost. The 19.5 hectare Canon La Gaffeliere vineyard is planted to 45% Merlot, 43% Cabernet Franc and 12% Cabernet Sauvignon.
The wine presented today offers a strong potential, and a youthful strength.
Obviously the 2016 vintage was a remarkable year rich in sunshine and low rainfall during the summer.
In the nose, wine reveals rich and complex aromas, still young in its expression with its notes of musk, black fruits and brambles, with background notes marked by a powerful but delicate barrel aging.
In the palate, the wine shows us all its power with the notes of cold tobacco and ripe fruit. The finish is long with a rich and powerful balanced structure.
Undoubtedly, this young wine is promising, it deserves to be tasted in 2023...

Monasia Association wishes to thank the family Ohana who offered to our President this 100 % organic wine.
