Basel, a cultural capital of Switzerland, European Center of World Trade and Congress, home to numerous museums, exhibitions and conférences relating to the most actual problems, particularly climate change.
Just a week before the start of the Green Swan Conference organised by the Bank of International Settlements in Basel MonAsia association was invited to visit the special exhibition EARTH AT ITS LIMITS where we were able to see the state of our planet at the Age of Antropocene as well as to measure the changes made by human beings.
Humanity is responsible for significant changes happening at our planet. Indeed, human beings are disruptive - more than seven billion in 2020, (industrial) pollution, deforestation of continents (starting in Europe in the 17th-20th century), the cultivation of land for (gigantic) cities, agriculture, mobility and the use of natural resources. Just imagine the scale of a huge impact on ecosystems.
The Earth At Its Limits gives a chance to predict the future, estimate the impact made, even to see the real connection between CO2 emissions and global warming. By the way, did you know that it was the American scientist Eunice Newton Foote (1818-1888) who discovered the relation between CO2 and global warming already in 1856. Hardly anyone paid attention to this discovery at the time. The result is obvious : today, atmospheric CO2 is at a level that has not been seen on Earth for at least 800,000 years, and probably much longer. Can we do anything to shape the future? Fortunately, there is still time. By taking a worldwide effort as well as changing the frame of mind in order to achieve a mutual understanding.
We are all a part of nature, a complex system where everything is interconnected: plants, animals, fungi, microorganisms, human beings... Can nature exist without the last ones? Easily, and what about humanity? Can we manage our life without nature? That’s a good question to think about. We invite you to share your thoughts and wishes with us since only by coordinating our forces and immediate action we will be able to face these challenges and what’s more important - find a practical solution. As Pope Francis said , “the time for seeking global solutions is running out. We can find suitable solutions only if we act together and in agreement.”
