#Sustainable #fishing
#Seafood is the primary source of protein for more than 1 bln people around the world. Evidently, #fishing is important both for supporting livelihoods and as a source of food but, with the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) stating that 90% of the world’s fish stocks are now fully fished or overfished. The possible solution is to take real steps towards sustainable fishing.
The Marine Stewardship Council defines sustainable fishing as « leaving enough fish in the ocean, respecting habitats and ensuring people who depend on fishing can maintain their livelihoods»
Fish and other seafood are potentially a great renewable resource. But they need to be carefully managed. One of such solutions was offered by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco and as a result it helped to save one of the most #iconic marine species from extinction. It concerns a tuna tagging project, ‘On the Med tuna trail’. Data provided by the #tags are improving #scientific understanding of this migratory species, resulting in better management decisions. «More than a symbol, the preservation of bluefin tuna is a test of our ability to finally adopt a collectively responsible attitude», said H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco @hshprincealbertii
Today thanks to the @french.riviera.whale.watching we saw this practice in action. Undoubtedly, we are at the forefront of promoting sustainable #fishing practices. Together we can make a big difference to the health and sustainability of wild fish stocks and seafood farms (aquaculture). It will be better for both : human beings and our planet.
