The G7 Summit: key questions and participants
This year the Group of Seven meeting is to take place in Cornwall, UK, 11-13 June.
The focus of the 2021 is the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change.
This summit will be the first for Japanese PM Youshihide Suga, US President Joe Biden, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel.
Other representatives include Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Cornwall seems to be a perfect location for discussions the global challenges of climate change since it is a driver of the UK Green Revolution with the first geothermal power plant and lithium extraction site.
Reports have emerged that the UK will introduce a “clean green initiative” at the Summit. As Boris Johnson said, he wants to see the nations « creating a greener and more prosperous future ». It looks like a multilateral cooperation as the leaders of the G7 nations have already agreed on a joint commitment to ensure their power sectors reach net-zero in the 2030s, setting up for the economy-wide transition by 2050.
